MIND with Nicky Young: Mullen Lowe Salt Group MD
Our MINDs are our greatest assets. In this ep I’m joined by Nicky Young, MullenLowe Salt group MD and mental health advocate. We cover all things leadership + mental health; from burnout, “losing your mind” and being strong. Since her own mental breakdown in 2017 and recovery, Nicky shares her story in the hope she will catch others before they fall. Utilising her platform, Nicky works to destigmatise mental illness within the workplace, starting with leadership.
Nicky is Group Managing Director of MullenLowe salt, an end to end purpose and strategic communications consultancy. She is also a Managing Partner of salt’s holding company, MullenLoweGroup.
In 2017, on International Woman’s Day, Nicky suffered a break down from clinical depression. Her two months’ sick leave coincided with the Royal Foundation’s Heads Together campaign encouraging those suffering with mental illness to talk themselves back to good health. Today Nicky shares her story with others in the hope she will catch others before they fall. Utilising her platform, Nicky works to destigmatise mental illness within the workplace, starting with leadership. She offers c-suite consulting to companies like Unilever and William Grant & Sons on how to create diverse and inclusive cultures. She sits on corporate and industry panel events, from Disney to the PRCA, sharing her experience with leadership and employees. Nicky delivers bespoke talks to global internal functions including HR, Finance and Communications on the power of mental fitness to nurture a productive, more engaged and loyal workforce. She also delivers training to CEO and MDs belonging to the global executive leadership group, Vistage.
In March 2019, Nicky was named an Inside-Out Role Model alongside other UK business leaders from organisations including Tesco, PWC and LandSec. Published in the Sunday Times, Inside-Out.org celebrates leaders who ‘come out’ and use their leadership platform to destigmatise mental illness in the workplace. Nicky is a Mental Health First Aid Champion and a graduate in Psychology & Communications from the University of South Africa. She is also an accredited PROSCI change management practioner and increasingly works with businesses who wish to align their corporate purpose with employee personal purpose.
Before joining MullenLowe salt, Nicky worked at management consulting firm PA Consulting Group in the Strategy and Marketing practice. Nicky is the proud mum of her 8 year old son, Alex.
